The canals of Amsterdam are navigated daily by thousands of residents, visitors and tourists. To ensure safety and to continue to improve the quality of life, it is required to monitor all sailing movements on the canals and, where necessary, to make adjustments by means of regulation and by tackling nuisance. Portpay is the organization commissioned by the City of Amsterdam to monitor and manage the canals through an advanced dashboard.
Casing made “transparent”
This dashboard is fed by data coming from smart sensors and cameras that are placed by the company Portpay B.V. Sensors are very advanced nowadays and measure multiple values at the same time. Via the platform of Portpay B.V., various signals received by the sensors are merged and combined into usable data. By setting certain limits, system users are directed to things that differ from the “norm”.
All the data together is used for big data analysis and making improvement proposals. To enable the analyses, the sensors in the field must send the collected data to the central database. Collecting the date is realized by using Wifi, 4G and the own LoRa network that Portpay B.V. has rolled out throughout Amsterdam.
Overview of all components
For the data collection, Portpay B.V. uses computers equipped with Linux software and cameras that are directed at important points on the canals, among other things. The system must collect data 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and be powered by LFP battery technology.
This means that in the summer a maximum of 7 hours of charging is done at night and then 17 hours of operation (and therefore discharge) during the day.
Elfa developed a stainless steel case containing a Lithium Iron Phosphate (Lifepo4) battery that is fully compliant with the customer’s program of requirements. This battery, thanks to its high energy density and fast charging time, can continuously power the smart monitoring system during the summer days. The advantages of Lithium Iron Phosphate (Lifepo4) batteries include long life, little to no maintenance, extreme safety, light weight, and charging efficiency.

At Elfa, the third generation is already at the helm. For more than 100 years, the family-owned company has been an expert in the field of A-brand lighting, batteries, primary and secondary batteries for clients in the industrial (OEM) and institutional sectors. Elfa has established a unique leadership position in the market by uncompromisingly delivering high quality and added value. In packaging specialist Faes, Elfa found a cooperation partner whose working methods, philosophy and core values are uniquely in line with those of Elfa.
“Elfa’s strength lies in our broad view of solutions and service towards our customers. We are flexible and deliver customized solutions. We unburden the customer by also offering complementary products and services that are not part of our standard range. Our motto is: “if it is not there yet, we will make it”. We structurally fulfill this promise in the broadest sense of the word.”
Pieter Schutte, CEO of Elfa.
Tightened laws and regulations for transporting lithium batteries
In the context of emergency management, there was an increasing focus on safety around primary and secondary lithium batteries. Laws, regulations, standards and requirements were further tightened, including in the area of transportation. For example, IATA (International Air Transport Association, the authority on Dangerous Goods Regulations) initiated new regulations, which only allow batteries to have a maximum ‘state of charge’ of 30%. The challenge of coming up with a solution to reduce the maximum charge of batteries quickly and efficiently has been successfully met by Elfa with their customers.
Made a virtue of necessity
The collaboration between Elfa and Faes came about from a similar need. Indeed, restrictions on packaging and labeling also became stricter in the early 2020s, leaving customers with their hands tied. Transporting certain types of batteries according to standards and requirements was cumbersome and time-consuming. This prompted customers to ask Elfa for help in finding solutions. After all, doing nothing was not an option. An Elfa employee suggested packaging specialist Faes Cases as a possible partner to take on this challenge together. So it happened that Pieter Schutte (CEO of Elfa), Daan Schutte (Sales Director) and Jeen Budding (Marketing Manager) visited Faes in Reusel, North Brabant.
“I immediately had a conection with the people of Faes and felt at home right away, also in our philosophy and way of working we appeared to match very well. Like Elfa, Faes is a family business and, like us, they attach great importance to a human approach, loyalty, integrity and mutual trust.”
Pieter Schutte
Shortly thereafter, Bart Burmanje (Sales Manager at Faes) in turn visited Elfa and that was the beginning of a first joint project and close cooperation.
“From the very first conversation it was clear that Elfa and Faes have a lot to offer each other. After all, Elfa has nice challenging packaging issues for Faes and Faes in turn delivers very nice packaging solutions, with which Elfa feels fully understood. In my opinion, the ingredients for a close and long-term cooperation.”
Bart Burmanje, Sales Manager at Faes
What makes the collaboration between Elfa and Faes successful?
In addition to personally, Elfa and Faes proved to be on the same wavelength professionally. Both companies excel in flexibility and customization and consider total solutions, rather than just products, as their core business. Solutions with which they unburden their customer or support them with specific issues. For example, Elfa thinks along with its customers about safety risks and supplies complementary products, such as (lithium) fire extinguishers and suitable packaging in accordance with the applicable standards. Faes not only delivers sustainable custom packaging, but also thinks along with you about the correct specifications of packaging for specific applications. They also advise customers on efficient and effective packaging management. All of this is done by both companies with a view to providing added value, so that customers regard them not only as suppliers, but also as partners. The similarities are the ingredients that make the cooperation between the two companies successful, now and in the future.

Saft launches the Smart Battery Selector, a handy tool that helps you choose the right battery for your IoT project.
When working on an IoT application, the choice of the right battery is often not made until the last minute. However, it is wiser to think about the possibilities at the beginning of the project.
This brings a number of interesting benefits. This allows you to optimize your device’s power requirements to find the best possible solutions to extend the life of your device while ensuring that it gets the power it needs to operate.
Knowing the size of the battery is also an important consideration when designing your device. But most importantly, the battery is an important part of the total cost of ownership of your projects and should not be overlooked if you want your project to succeed.
That’s why Saft has created the Smart Battery Selector, a tool that, in just 7 steps, can help you discover which batteries fit your use case, how much space you should leave in your product design for batteries, what the price is, and what average life you can expect from your battery once integrated into your IoT device. After completing the 7 steps, you can choose to receive the PSF report. To try the Smart Battery Selector, click on the link below.
For all products that contain a battery (or are loose), a disposal fee must be paid to Stibat. This is in line with international laws and regulations (environment). This also applies to devices that are supplied with batteries (e.g. torches).
Stibat has announced new rates for the disposal fee (or management fee) that will go into effect on 01-01-2021. On average, the amounts will increase by about 5%. View the list of the new rates here.
Overloaded soldier
Soldiers nowadays are carrying more and more technical gadgets, which increases the weight that must be carried by the soldier. The result is an overloaded soldier, which has a negative effect on his maneuverability and survival, among other things.
Because Elfa is not only a wholesaler but also a knowledge center with over 100 years of experience, we were invited to talk about the developments of ‘smart batteries’. Elfa has a lighter ‘smart’ backpack battery that can power (almost) any device on a soldier’s body. This battery is not only lighter, but also a lot safer. This is because it is a battery that does not go into thermal runaway after penetration. Would you like more information about Elfa’s smart batteries? Please contact us.
