Lithium polymer (also known as LiPo) is a well-known chemistry often used in batteries. For example, a LiPo battery is often used for development projects of various professional applications.

When companies set up a technical development project, choosing the right battery type is often done last. This can lead to problems which slow down the development process. Often LiPo batteries are chosen for these trajectories, because they are small and compact, which makes them easy to incorporate into certain systems. Also, the size of a LiPo battery (length x width x height) can be adjusted slightly. This makes them more compliant with the specifications of the particular system they will be used for.

Additionally, these battery types have other features which make them interesting for professional applications.

Advantages of a Lithium Polymer battery

LiPo offers advantages over other types of batteries. Some of these advantages are explained here.

Low weight: Lithium polymer batteries and accumulators are approximately 20% to 35% lighter than, for example, a NiMH battery. For this reason, they are often used in portable applications.

No memory effect: Memory effect: Memory effect occurs in some batteries when they are frequently discharged to a certain level before being fully recharged. The capacity of a battery becomes lower this way. LiPo batteries do not suffer from this memory effect.

High discharge current: The discharge current of lithium polymer batteries is very high, making them excellent for demanding applications and devices. Think of hard disks and video camera motors. Additionally, this battery type has a constant discharge voltage, giving a stable current throughout the entire discharge period.

Operates at different temperatures: This type of batteries can perform under various temperatures. They can be charged at 0℃ to +60℃. Discharging is from -20℃ to +40℃.

Environmentally friendly: LiPO batteries are more environmentally friendly than many other battery types because they do not contain toxic substances such as cadmium or mercury.

More charge: a lithium polymer battery or accumulator can hold more charge than other batteries, such as the NiCD or NiMH battery. The high energy density can be up to 400 Wh/L and provides a lot of capacity (mAh) per charge.

Long lifespan: usually LiPo batteries last a long time. This is especially useful for devices where it is difficult to change batteries (depending on the application). Fortunately, these battery variants have excellent rechargeability (over 300 charge cycles). High charging currents (0.5-1A) make them quick to charge.

In addition to lithium polymer, there are other lithium batteries that are commonly used in professional applications. Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) or lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are some examples. More information? Feel free to contact Daan!
